Największa z dolin Polskich Tatr Zachodnich podchodzi pod kopulaste, trawą porosłe wierchy ich rdzennego grzbietu. W znacznej mierze zalesiona, zwłaszcza w dolnych partiach, ma szczególny pełen melancholii urok, właściwy Tatrom Zachodnim.
W górnej swej części dzieli się na dwie gałęzie: pd. zwaną Doliną Starorobociańską i pd.-zach., w której znajduje się największa z hal tatrzańskich Polana Chochołowska. U pd.-zach jej krańca stoi na wys. 1150 m duże schronisko PTTK, w środkowej części doliny, poniżej ujścia Dol. Starorobociańskiej gajówka TPN.
Do Siwej Polany , leżącej w odległości około 1 km od wylotu doliny (10 km od centrum Zakopanego) dojeżdża autobus PKS. Dalszy przejazd dla pojazdów mechanicznych jest zabroniony.
Z doliny wiodą następujące szlaki turystyczne:
- zielony na Rakoń - ok. 2 1/2 godz., potem na Wołowiec (2063 m - znaki niebieskie - ok. 3 1/2 godz.);
- żółty na Grzesia (1653 m) - ok. 1 1/2 godz., a następnie na Wołowiec grzbietem Długiego Upłazu - znaki niebieskie - ok 3 1/2 godz.;
- czerwony na Trzydniowiański Wierch (1758 m) - ok. 2 1/2 godz. i w dół poniżej Polany Chochołowskiej - razem ok. 4 godz.;
- czarny na Siwą Przełęcz (1812 m) przez Dolinę Starorobociańską ok. 2 1/2 godz; stąd na Ornak (1867 m) i w dół na Iwaniacką Przełęcz znaki zielone;
- żółty przez Iwaniacką Przełęcz (1459 m) do Doliny Kościeliskiej - ok. 2 1/2 godz.;
- czarny do Doliny Kościeliskiej poprzez górne partie Doliny Lejowej - ok. 2 1/2 godz.
Dolina Lejowa
Rzadko zwiedzana i bez specjalnych osobliwości, zawiera kilka uroczych hal. Dnem doliny biegnie szlak żółty doprowadzający na Niżniej Polanie Kominiarskiej do wspomnianej w innych opisach Scieżki nad Reglami (ok. 1 1/4 godz.).
The Dolina Chochołowska, the biggest of the valleys in the Polish Western Tatras, extends almost up to the domed, grassy summits of the main range. It is largely wooded, especially in the lower sections, and has the melancholy charm which is a particular feature of the Western Tatras.
In its upper part it divides into two branches: the southern one, known as the Dolina Starorobociańska, and the south-west one, which has the Polana Chochołowska, the biggest of the Tatra mountain meadows. At the south-west edge of the meadow, at an altitude of 1150 m, is a large PTTK mountain refuge, while in the middle part of the valley, below the etrance to the Dolina Starorobociańska, is a Tatra National Park gamekeeper's lodge.
There is a bus service to the Siwa Polana , about 1 km from the mouth of the valley (10 km from the centre of Zakopane). Motor vehicles are not allowed to go farther.
The following trails lead from the valley:
- The green one to Rakoń (approx. 2.5 hours), then the blue trail to Wołowiec (altitude 2063 m - approx. 3.5 hours).
- The yellow trail to Grzes (altitude 1653 m, approx. 1.5 hours). From there blue signs lead along the Długi Upłaz ridge to the top of Wołowiec (alt. 1663 m, approx. 3.5 hours);
- From the Chochołowska refuge the red trail leads to the peak called Trzydniowiański Wierch (alt. 1758 m - about 2.5 hours) and descends again to the Dolina Chochołowska, joining it at a point lower than the PTTK refuge (approx. 4 hours).
- Likewise, from a point lower than the PTTK refuge, the black trail leads along the Dolina Starorobociańska valley to the col Siwa Przełęcz (alt. 1812 m - approx. 2.5 hours), and then on the Ornak (1867 m), whece the green trail leads down to the col Iwaniacka Przełęcz (1459 m).
- From there the yellow trail takes us to Dolina Kościeliska (approx. 2.5 hours), whereas the black trail also leads to the Dolina Kościeliska, but way of upper parts of the Dolina Lejowa valley (about 2.5 hours).
Dolina Lejowa valley
This valley, which has no particular points of interest, and which is seldom visited, has several charming mountain meadows. Along the floor of the valley runs the yellow trail, which at the Niżnia Polana Kominiarska meets the Ścieżka nad Reglami path mentioned in previous descriptions (approx. 1.25 hours).
