 Zakopane jest największym w Polsce ośrodkiem turystyki górskiej i narciarstwa. Liczy około 28 tys. mieszkanców. Co roku odwiedzane jest przez około 2 mln turystów. Jest położone w województwie nowosądeckim, w południowej części Podhala, u stóp Tatr - jedynej w tej części Europy grupy górskiej o charakterze alpejskim - w kotlinie pomiędzy nimi a grzbietem Gubałówki.  Zakopane jest najwyżej położonym miastem w Polsce: jego część miejska rozciąga się od 750 do 1000 m npm. W granicach administracyjnych leży część Tatr Polskich, a najwyższym jego punktem jest wierzchołek Świnicy (2301 m). Centralny punkt miasta - skrzyżowanie ul. Krupówki i Kościuszki leży na 838 m npm. Wysokość sprawia, że Zakopane leży w strefie klimatu górskiego. Pierwsze dokumenty wzmiankujące o Zakopanem pochodzą z XVII wieku i mówią o polanie Zakopiska. Dalsze jego dzieje związane są z rozwojem hutnictwa i górnictwa, a poźniej lecznictwa oraz turystyki. Z niewielkiej wioski poprzez stację klimatyczną stało się miastem określanym mianem zimowej stolicy Polski Zakopane jest centrum sportów zimowych i miejscem odbywania wielu imprez sportowych i kulturalnych. Jest też ośrodkiem kultywowania folkloru góralskiego. W Zakopanem wydawana jest gazeta - "Tygodnik Podhalański", który rozchodzi się na terenie Podhala, wśród Polaków w Chicago oraz w sieci Internet. Tutaj też mieści się miejscowa rozgłośnia Radio "Alex" (FM 72,26 i 105,2 MHz).

 Zakopane is the biggest center of skiing and mountain tourism in Poland. The population is around 28,000. Each year, the city is visited by 2 million tourists. It is situated in Nowosadeckie county on south part of Podhale, below Tatra Mountains in the valley between them and Gubalowka Ridge. Zakopane is the highest located city in Poland between 750 to 1000 m above sea level. In the administrative range of Zakopane lies part of Polish Tatra Mountains, the highest peak of which is the Swinica (2301 meters). At the center of the town, marked by the crossroads of Krupowki and Kosciuszki Streets, the elevation is 838 meters above sea level. Due to this elevation, Zakopane has a mountain climate. The first written records about Zakopane are from the seventeenth century; the Zakopiska Glade is mentioned in the earliest town documents. The development and history of the city are connected with mining and metallurgy; later, the town has come to be associated with therapeutics and tourism. From the small village stage through to its current status as a popular spa station, the city has been earning its nickname as the winter capital of Poland. Zakopane is a center for winter sports and the place where many sports and cultural events take place. It is a place where mountain folklore is reported and cultivated. In Zakopane, the newspaper "Tygodnik Podhalanski" (Podhale Weekly) is published. This newspaper is distributed in Podhale and to the large Polish population living in Chicago. Zakopane also operates small FM station, "Alex" (FM 72.26 and 105.2 MHz). |
